Hello, hello!

One of the most delightful things when traveling is eating the food of the place you are visiting. Well, let's put it this way: one of the most delightful things, in life, is eating. When I was young, I traveled a lot with my dad. We did our trips around Europe by bus, and we always ended up eating the same thighs: calzone and burgers. I remember this trip to Brussels, where we went three times to the same pizza place. When I grew older, I decided that I really like to know the place with all my five senses: I did not only want to see the place, but also to feel, smell, hear and taste the place. We somehow—my dad and I—heard the place, since my dad is a polyglot and spoke to everybody in every place we visited. I ended up inheriting the same ability for language but most importantly, the same love for understanding other people's worlds. Anyhow, I also started going to concerts, and taking dance classes, and looking for natural places and eating the typical food of the place I was in! What is more amazing than that?

Last week, I traveled with friends and family to New Orleans. New Orleans is a very particular and special place for so many reasons but two of the most important are music and food. Music, well, you just have to go. Just by being there you are embedded in the most vibrating jazz scene. And food, I mean… here is a recap:

  1. We arrived so late at night, so my friend, Z. and I woke up the next morning to a call: going to the Wakin Bakin spot just a few blocks away from our place to have some massive breakfast. I ordered this bowl with beans, tofu, spinach and a bunch of chiles. In the place they pour you endless coffee. The only downside: I paid seven (7!) dollars for an orange juice.

  2. My all time favorite place that I have been longing for since last time I visited: Casamentos. This place is over a hundred years old and they specialize in soul food–the kind of food people eat in the South of the US. We had some oysters as entrée (yes, I do eat shells since they don't have a central nervous system) and then I ordered some fried oysters with the most delicious fries I have ever had, with tons of garlic and parmigiano. Downside: bloating warning.

  3. Nothing better than a homemade meal. This was prepared with love and care: a vegetarian gumbo, a typical stoved thing from NOLA, was prepared without any chicken or shrimps for me. We ended up having some pistachio ice cream for dinner. Yum!

  4. The greatest fast food lunch. My significant other had this fish with some spinach while I enjoyed the typical mac&cheese. As we say in Spain, allá donde fueres haz lo que vieres.

  5. Last morning we all went together to a breakfast place where I devoured some breakfast fries with a side of biscuit and a little bit of fruit. The biscuit is a bread made with tons of butter, savory and delicious. Downside: not light.

My friend ordered some shrimp grips….

As you can see, there was barely one day that I didn't eat so incredibly well. Everyday was a feast day. So, if you are thinking about visiting NOLA, you should also be thinking about tasting NOLA. It wont let you down.
